2. Decompress

If you’ve come home from a busy day at work, you might find it helpful to take a few minutes to decompress and transition to the home lifestyle. You only need a few minutes. You can do something as simple as park in the driveway, close your eyes, and listen to soothing music.

This allows you to relax for a few moments and let go of the stresses of your working day. It prepares you to more easily shift your mind into parent mode.


3. Take five to reconnect

When you walk through the door, take five minutes to connect with your family. Put away your cell phone and give them a hug. Take a seat on the sofa or at the table and spend a few minutes reconnecting.

You might want to grab a story and curl up on the sofa or let your child show you what they did in school. If the weather is nice, you might want to play ball or go for a walk in the park. This gives the kids the chance to burn off some energy before you rush out to cook dinner.


4. Ask the children to do their part

Getting kids involved in household chores is a great way to keep them busy during this busy time. Maybe the table needs to be set or the dog needs to be fed. Wet clothes in the washing machine may need to be put in the dryer.

Involving children in household chores teaches them responsibility and improves their self-esteem. You can always sweeten the pot by rewarding them for extra chores.
