Although it is a vital organ, the pancreas and its mode of operation remain largely unknown. Also, it is very difficult to know how to take care of it! And while smoking can harm it, simply watching our diet can also protect this crucial gland and avoid disrupting its activity. So, discover in this list these foods that are very bad for the pancreas.

What is the pancreas for?

In our body, this small gland of 15 by 3 centimeters is a featherweight figure with its approximately 50 g. Nestled deep in our abdomen, just behind the stomach, this gland is called « endocrine » because it secretes insulin and glucagon, key hormones for regulation of blood glucose levels. It is also considered “exocrine” due to its secretion of a pancreatic juice rich in digestive enzymes. This pancreatic juice is then poured into the duodenum to allow the digestion of fats and sugars. By performing these two functions, the pancreas assumes an important role in our body and protects us from obesity and diabetes. To limit the risk of pancreatic cancer and acute or chronic pancreatitis, here are some foods you should limit.

Foods to limit to take care of your pancreas

Already associated with colorectal cancer, deli meats are also closely linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. This would be explained in particular by its nitrites and nitrates, preservatives, maturation accelerators and color fixers widely used for this type of food.

2) White bread

Due to its function as a blood sugar regulator, foods with a very high glycemic index can overwork the pancreas. It then ends up exhausting itself and operating in slow motion. Also, to preserve your pancreas and prevent the risk of diabetes, this type of high GI food should be limited, especially when consumed outside of meals.

3) Rice cakes

With their high glycemic index (82), rice cakes tend to put too much strain on the pancreas, which can overwork and disrupt it. The risk then is that it no longer releases enough insulin. Sugar can then build up in the blood because it cannot be processed properly. This puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes.

4) Alcohol among the worst ‘foods’ for the pancreas

Alcohol consumption without moderation is a major risk factor for pancreatitis, an inflammation of this gland. In 80% of cases, this inflammation is indeed caused by alcoholism. Installed chronically, this pancreatic inflammation triples the risk of pancreatic cancer. Note that strong alcohols and beer are among the most harmful for this organ.

In October 2021, a study had shown that the consumption of saturated fatty acids of animal origin (typically found in cheese, cream or butter) was linked to an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer. During this work, the researchers noted, however, that monounsaturated fatty acids of plant origin (nuts, vegetable oils, avocado, etc.) could, on the other hand, reduce the risks.

Crisps, fries… Fried foods contain carcinogenic heterocyclic amines that are dangerous for the breasts, the lungs, the intestines, but also of course for the pancreas.

Sweets, and more generally foods high in sugar, have a high glycemic index which overloads the pancreas, thus impairing its proper functioning. This then leads to a chronic rise in blood sugar and type 2 diabetes. It is therefore better to limit their consumption and also counterbalance with low GI foods to spare the pancreas.

8) Red meat

Consume deli meats and red meat increases the risk of pancreatic cancer by 29% compared to meatless diets. Particularly harmful, grilled red meat promotes pancreatic cancer, because as with frying, the blackened parts contain carcinogenic heterocyclic amines in repeated and frequent exposure.

Like sweets, sodas and fruit juices increase the production of insulin by the pancreas, but also the risk of development of cancer cells. It is therefore better to limit your consumption of sugary drinks and avoid over-sweetening your coffee or tea.

In general, it is advisable to limit the intake of bad fats, the latter can prematurely wear out the pancreatic cells which are responsible for the digestion of fats. Having a good knowledge of the glycemic index of the foods you eat also allows you to avoid excesses and to have a better balance between those with a high GI (to be consumed in small quantities) and those with a low GI (to be consumed in favor).
