Being a full-time caretaker can feel like managing multiple jobs at once, which Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis is all too aware of. The 44-year-old model shares what it’s been like to care for someone with dementia since her husband’s diagnosis was made public in February. Now she talks about the importance of meeting her own needs as her family navigates a new reality.

On Sunday, she shared a video of herself spending time alone on Instagram, writing in the caption, « Bruce and his masterful mic doubles. He said, ‘He just can’t get out of his own path.’ I never really understood what that meant until it hit me in the face the other day. It’s me. I can’t get out of my own way.

Willis said neglecting her own needs has taken a toll on her and those around her, something she recently realized when speaking to her eight-year-old daughter, Evelyn. « I plan, organize, take care of everyone, and I still rarely take time for myself, » she wrote in the caption. « The kicker came from Evelyn a few days ago, when she said, ‘Mom, you gotta get out and touch the grass.’ Spoken like her father’s child. I’m so tight she sees it, they all feel it. What good is that to anyone? » In the post, Taylor Swift’s « Anti-Hero » plays while Willis is hiking, and she joked in the caption, « Hi! I am actually the problem.

This conversation with his daughter prompted Willis to take some well-deserved « me time » over the weekend. “Today I took the time to do something I loved to do: a 30 minute hike, and it made all the difference,” she wrote. « [My family is] giving me permission, almost begging me to take time for myself and I need to hush, listen and go ahead.
