What causes skin tags, exactly?

“Acrochordons are fleshy growths of skin that typically grow along the neck, groin, and armpits,” Joshua Zeichner, MDdirector of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Department of Dermatology in New York, says SELF. Like warts, they grow out of your skin on a stalk and contain their own blood supply but little innervation (i.e. nerve supply), Sarmela Sunder, MDa dual-board board-certified facial plastic reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills, says SELF.

And they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Shapes: beaded or finger-like projections and even soft sac-like fibroids. Sizes: from one to five millimeters, although skin tags as long as 12.7 millimeters have been recorded.2 Although experts agree that there is no single determinable cause of tags, there is evidence that the formation of tags is linked to a number of factors, including friction caused by rubbing the skin against skin or tight clothing, genetic tendencies and certain health conditions. says Dr. Sunder. High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol, for example, are all correlated with the presence of skin tags.3

Why am I suddenly getting skin tags?

There is no direct link between age and skin tags, Tracy Evans, MD, MPHgraduate dermatologist and medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco, says SELF. But many conditions that correlate with (not cause!) skin tag formation are more likely to develop in adulthood than in childhood. Research suggests that skin tags can appear as early as adolescence, but are more likely to appear after age 40 (and the likelihood levels off again after age 70 – who knew?).1

Regardless of your age, if you notice that you have a multitude of skin tags, make an appointment with a doctor, especially if you have other symptoms that are not typical for you: « There are situations where a significant number skin tags can signal an underlying condition or syndrome, such as certain autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s disease, certain gastrointestinal syndromes causing polyps, or a growth-related syndrome known as acromegaly,” explains Dr. Sunder. « Having a skin tag doesn’t mean you’ll get one of these diseases, and having one of these conditions doesn’t mean you’ll get skin tags, but sometimes we see an overlap in the two. »

Can I learn how to prevent skin tags?

Unfortunately, this is a skin condition that you cannot fix with a dedicated skincare regimen. « There’s nothing you can really do to prevent skin tags, » says Dr. Evans. Although it does add that reducing the amount of friction your skin experiences in areas like your armpits and neck (avoiding tight clothing, padding belts, or suspenders that frequently rub in one area, or using an anti-chafing balm) could help. Working with your doctor to control correlated health issues, if you have one, can also help prevent skin tags, although this is not guaranteed.
