Before there was Kylie, there was Huda Kattan. Regular ranking on the beauty and wealth mogul lists of brands such as Forbes and FortuneKattan launched her beauty blog in 2010, followed by her eponymous beauty brand, Huda Beauty, in 2013. Her capital is as much social as financial: in 2017, Huda Beauty was valued at $1.2 billion, and today , Kattan has over 50 million followers on instagram— over 10 million more than Jennifer Aniston, for reference.
« Running a beauty business, there are a lot of sleepless nights, » Kattan tells SELF from her home in Dubai. « But what really keeps me going is when someone close to me is going through a tough time, because I always want to try and find a solution and fix it. » For Kattan, it’s really all in the family: she holds the title of co-CEO of Huda Beauty alongside her husband, Christopher Goncalo. Together they share an 11-year-old daughter, Nour, who has a verified instagram account of herself – and even starred alongside her mother in the cover may 2019 by Vogue Arabia. « It’s really important for my daughter to realize that self-care is different for everyone, » says Kattan. Although her daughter is only entering her teenage years, Kattan is already leading by example, completing her bedtime routine with Nour by her side. « She should find what works for her and take time each day, whether it’s 5-10 minutes or a few hours, to focus on herself. »
Kattan also hopes to instill boundaries and values of self-care in the workplace. She says that Huda Beauty (and its skincare line, Wishful) recently implemented « Meetless Fridays and Self-Love Fridays, where our employees take all day to rest, center and practicing whatever self-love looks like to each of them. »
« To be there for someone else, you have to take care of yourself first, » says Kattan. « My time is so precious, and it gives me the energy and dedication I need to not only take care of myself, but everyone around me. » Below, Kattan walks SELF through her bedtime routine, including a beauty CEO’s complete skincare routine.
My daughter and I are getting ready to go to bed together, so around 7 p.m. I’ll send her to have a bath, then I’ll take my bath, and then after that we’ll brush our teeth together.
I try to take a bath most nights with lavender-scented bath salts, which help dissolve the stresses of the day. For me, taking a bath is one of the best ways to reset for the night. Because my skin is so dry, I spend a lot of time moisturizing it, so I try to do the same with her. And then I like to spend time talking to him about his day, telling him stories. I try to keep the end of the day really grounded and emotional.
