Every year around this time, I start to feel like I’m watching the end credits of the season of my comedy-drama Black Girl. And just like everyone’s favorite goofy protagonist, Issa Rae, who reflects on her life at the end of every Insecure episode, I often think about my last months. Summer is fun, sure, but between running recklessly through the streets with my friends and drinking until the end of the day, I’m not always proud of the decisions I make, but damn it can be true in every season.
But as with many of my favorite shows, as the drama comes and goes, there’s one thing I’m always grateful for: the soundtrack. Whether I’m drowning summertime sorrows in the bathtub or chasing them with a midday twerking session as I summon new joy, music has always helped me set the stage for whatever comes. afterwards. As I work towards returning to my center, there are a few additional things that help me achieve this.
I work from home but travel frequently, often finding myself between New York and North Carolina. In order to keep my feet on the ground, I keep my journal handy, maintain a (somewhat) consistent meditation routine, and repeat several positive affirmations throughout my day (my current go-tos are: « You are worthy happiness today” and “You are capable of making big decisions”). asserting myself by singing in my shower, I consider it a win-win, so I curated a playlist with that specific goal in mind.
The following tracks are a special selection of songs that realign me with my best self. Songs like Gayathri Krishnan’s « 444 » remind me to breathe and stay in the moment, while Tyla Jane’s « Energy » lets me practice self-love and dance in my granny panties. more chic while I clean my kitchen. I manage this playlist from start to finish, and every time I play it, I recognize that I’m intentionally creating space for myself to heal, grow, and let go of anything that doesn’t serve me. I hope that every time you play it, it gives you the same comfort. Scroll down to browse songs on Spotify or keep scrolling for the full list of tracks. Enjoy.
