Diagnostic measures

For some time now, doctors have relied on transrectal ultrasound, or TRUS, to perform prostate biopsies. However, TRUS, which creates black and white images using sound waves, may miss areas of the prostate that may contain cancer. Obviously, this is a big deal for those battling prostate cancer.

Fortunately, doctors are making important breakthroughs in the accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer. Perhaps the most important step forward is a test that measures blood flow through the patient’s prostate using color Doppler ultrasound. This can dramatically improve the accuracy of biopsies and help doctors spot any threats of cancer.

Development monitoring

Once an accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer is made, doctors are tasked with carefully monitoring the progress of the threat. In the past, medical experts have relied on CT scans and MRIs for this, but these types of scans are unable to show how all areas affected by cancer. In fact, it’s especially difficult for CT and MRI scans to detect the impact of prostate cancer on lymph nodes.

This is why medical experts are now testing a new method known as multiparametric MRI, which is not only more accurate at detecting cancer, but can also be useful in showing its aggressiveness. While far from perfect, it could represent a major breakthrough in the fight against prostate cancer.
