When we collect freshly laundered laundry, the smell of freshness, along with clean clothes, is what we want to achieve.
Sometimes, however, it happens that even though we think we have done all the steps right, the laundry smells bad and we have to wash it again.
With a second wash we can fix the problem, but the real solution is to prevent it so that we don’t have to put in twice the effort!
Here are 5 tips to prevent laundry from smelling bad and to keep it smelling good!
How many times have we scheduled a wash and forgotten about it, leaving clothes in the drum for hours?
The first and perhaps most common factor in laundry odor is leaving clothes in the washing machine for too long without hanging them out.
Natural softener
Fabric softeners, which unfortunately are sometimes used to clean laundry, can be one of the main causes of a stench.
It might sound strange, but I’ll tell you why: the smell of fabric softener has the opposite effect if you leave your clothes in the washing machine for 10 minutes without hanging them out.
We have already seen that the laundry itself needs to be stretched out immediately, but the bad odor situation gets worse if you still use fabric softener and put too much of it.
The solution ? Use a natural perfumer! You can perfume your clothes by putting in the washing machine 2 tablespoons of Marseille soap, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice.
Avoid short washes
Another problem with smelly laundry is washing too briefly. This is a quick and inexpensive option, but you will change your mind when you need to wash your clothes again.
Washing at temperatures below 40 ° does not kill bacteria, which therefore remain attached to pipes and clothes, causing a bad smell on the laundry and in the washing machine.
Washing at temperatures of at least 40 to 60 degrees Celsius will prevent the odor. Once a month, you can perform a vacuum wash at 90 °.
Cleaning the washing machine
Did all the previous tips help you? Let me tell you the main one: always clean your washing machine!
It is essential to have a washing machine that is always impeccable because it is made up of many parts where dirt can settle.
Pay attention to the different components: drum, seal, bowl, window and filter. By cleaning these parts periodically, you can ensure that your laundry smells great.
You can also prepare a spray solution in the empty washing machine after each wash. Just dissolve 1 tablespoon of Marseille soap in 1/2 liter of water, then add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix everything and pour into a spray bottle.
