When you are away for a more or less short trip, there may be a power outage at home and cause temperature changes in the freezer or refrigerator: a real problem for food that may be altered. Fortunately, there is a very simple solution to avoid this kind of inconvenience and save the health of the whole family.

Summary

The problem does not really arise when we go on vacation for several weeks: we tend to unplug our appliances or empty the fridge. But when we travel for a weekend or just a few days, we do not necessarily have this reflex to remove all the plugs. When returning from this kind of trip, it is common to review our household appliances to check that everything is in order. However, there is one detail that often escapes us. What if there was a power outage while we were away or the cables jumped by accident? In this case, how do we know if our food is still in good condition? As a precaution and to avoid unpleasant surprises, it would be more prudent to apply this method. Before going on a trip this summer, remember to put a coin in the freezer. The reason is surprising, but it can save your life!

Why put a coin in the freezer?

First of all, it would be good to know if there was indeed a power outage at home during your absence and especially how long it would have lasted. In the event of a power outage, household appliances may be damaged, but the duration of the outage will provide more information about food preservation. Of course, if certain foods like meat or fish thaw, they could be very harmful if you eat them. As everyone knows: food that refreezes can easily cause poisoning!

How do you know if the food has actually defrosted? Here’s a simple way to find out. To be applied of course before travelling:

  • Fill a cup or glass with water and place it in the freezer.
  • Once the water is frozen, put a coin on it (in the middle of the cup).
  • On your return, check the condition of the piece: if it has remained in the same place in the middle of the cup, then this means that your food is still well frozen and ready to be eaten.
  • If you notice that the coin has slipped to the bottom of the cup, then this is a sign that there has indeed been a power failure and that your food has been defrosted for a while. Better throw them away!

This is still the most ingenious way to find out whether or not your freezer has shut down while you were away. Simple, fast and effective !

How is this trick useful on the go?

This solution is very useful especially during weekends. Indeed, generally, for long distance trips, you rather tend to defrost everything and turn off household appliances. In particular the freezer, precisely to avoid any defrosting due to a possible power failure. It is especially judicious to avoid consuming thawed and refrozen food without knowing it. This method not only prevents food contamination, but also product waste!

Reminder: thawed food should be eaten immediately. They should never be refrozen a second time, because bacteria dangerous to our health could develop. This is why it is not even advisable to leave food in the freezer before leaving for a long trip.
